“The economy of gesture” in portraiture

The NYT published a gallery of portraits of Obama’s advisers/influencers in its Sunday magazine. Two interesting audio elements worth listening to when you watch the gallery: the photographer talking about posing the subjects; the economy of gesture; and asking them to bring in an item that represents them. Also, the photo editor talking about the time constraints and the actual shooting environment. Click on “Launch Gallery” as well as “Backstory.”

  1. This link appears to be broken. Also, all the NY Times articles are now password/account protected. I used to be able to read them, but not anymore.
