You might have seen these amazing photos of a young “Eagle hunter” from Mongolia.
Since we’re about to start talking visual journalism, here’s a link to a story about the reporting the 24-year-old photographer did to find the story. (And how little outlets wanted to pay him).
And here’s a link to the actual photos. AH-MAY-ZING.
I have to say I like it even better than the NYT audio slideshow series. Maybe it’s my West Coast bias but man. This new audio slideshow series — Pop.u.LA.tion — is quirky, lively and it has a great template. Am jealous.
Thirty great websites in black and white.
As if the LA Times’ fire panoramas weren’t enough — go here — now there’s this from MediaStorm. Yeah, MediaStorm. Has to be one of my all-time favorites of ANYTHING ever produced in the history of stuff that’s been produced.
The EPpys were announced today. Best journalism/istic web sites as chosen by Editor and Publisher
For a full-list go here. (Yes. Explore. THEY are our competition).
This one won for best site under 1 million unique monthly viewers. Uh, what am I missing? I don’t think it’s all that great. Do you?
Then again espn.com won as well. OK. Full disclosure: Husband works for espn.com. But seriously, I think their website is boring. Must be my female sensibility.
Writing is hard. Reporting is tough. Finding stories can be a pain in the patootie.
With that in mind I am flagging a few things to get your creative juices flowing.
Because hey, we don’t want the MN Daily to beat us in terms of traffic. RIGHT?!
The National Magazine Awards are the Oscars for the mag world.
Here, the winner of best interactive feature. Note, it’s by the AARP (yeah, that group for OLD people.) Goes to show you “hip/forward thinking” doesn’t mean young.
Here’s the list of NMA nominees. Take a look at photo portfolio, feature, etc. If you haven’t already looked at the Pulitzer winners and finalists now’s a good time. Seriously. On a brain-dead day I’d spend time assessing the major award winners over the past year; then I’d read other work by the award-winning writer to get inspired. Nothing like reading the best to get better.
Lastly, here’s a link to a collage of projects made by supraprint winter students. It’s what I’m thinking could be the result of our gang field project on Tuesday. More on that to come.

The first, which includes the image above, comes from my husband. (Shameless!) But I wouldn’t post if it I didn’t think it was USEFUL. Take a look. He breaks down why he shot the way he did.
This second one is a hoot and comes from my favorite site, 10,000 Words. A bird steals ice cream. Now THIS would have made a great video, don’t you think??!
